Lightning on the Tooth
I shot both these photos on a visit to the Ranch in Mid-September when not too many people were about. The multiple strike was shot from the Seton Museum Parking lot. The single strike was shot from Cell Phone Hill above base camp. Both were shot facing Tooth Ridge. I'd been drinking a Shiner with locals at the James when I saw the sky flashing and made a beeline for the Ranch to catch these.

Enjoy,

Wander

working on the ranch
if there's anybody here who could help me out I'd really appreciate it. I went to Philmont twice as a scout, but never staffed, and I was wondering if the folks who worked on the actual ranch end of things were just general staffers or if they were permanent employees.

I just joined the Philmont community, and decided to join here, too. My name is Robert, I live in Washington, and I'm off in 2 weeks to spend my 3rd summer in God's Country, this year working as a Group Leader at PTC.

Hello. I worked at the Dining Hall last summer, and hope to be back in Philmont this coming. So far I've been trying to get as many people as I can to come from Lousiana.

Sodak Ranger
Hey. This is scott from South Dakota. I was a ranger in '03 and '04 (rayado ranger in '04 as well). I am also going to be a ranger next summer (I got my contract after christmas). Being a ranger is absolutely the best job I've ever had. There is a real sense of comradery between the staff.
Are any of you in this group staff from '03 or '04? It would be cool to exchange stories and pictures stuff. If you were, perhaps you've heard of E&F street, the group of crazies of which I was a founding member in '03. Anyway, I'm excited to hear from philmont staffers.

Save the Valle Vidal!
Hello people who love Philmont and New Mexico,

Save the Valle Vidal from drilling! Take an active part in saving this precious area in New Mexico.

What's happening in a nut shell.
Take part in the massive letter writing campaign!
Information about the Valle::

There is a form letter available at the Valle Vidal website. Please sign it and return it to the organization. They also provide addresses for the officials we should contact. I encourage you to write a personal letter to them specifically telling them how the Valle impacted your Scouting, Philmont, and/or New Mexico experiences.

Excellent letter writing guides from Amnesty International:A Quick Guide and A More Detailed Guide

Thank you for taking the time reading this. It probably means that this is important to you. Now, TAKE ACTION! Please spread this to others who value Philmont and your local BSA and/or environmentalist groups.

I want to go back to Philmont,
Alyssa Uphoff

"Donated to the American people in 1982, the Valle Vidal is a lush mountain basin, located in the heart of New Mexico's Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This 100,000 acre gem of the Carson National Forest is abundant with Rocky Mountain wildlife including mule deer, mountain lion, black bear, bald eagles, and native Rio Grande cutthroat trout. The alpine meadows and conifer forests of the Valle Vidal are home to New Mexico's largest elk herd.

With its spectacular vistas, hiking trails, healthy trout streams and wildlife populations, the Valle Vidal is a special place to New Mexico sportsmen, anglers, hikers, wildlife viewers, and Boy Scouts from the adjacent Philmont Scout Ranch. The Valle Vidal comprises the headwaters of both the Canadian and Cimarron Rivers. As a source of fresh water, wildlife, firewood, and grazing lands, the Valle Vidal is a vital resource base for the agricultural and ranching communities of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado." -Coalition for the Valle Vidal

Central IL philfest
From a friend:

"We invite you to the 2004 annual Philfest!

What is Philfest you ask? Well, long story short, it is when a group of staff members who have worked at a camp called Philmont gather together around the campfire swapping stories of adventure and their time at the ranch. As the years have passed, anyone who enjoys the outdoors, hanging out with friends and visiting with fellow staff members can join in the festivities. This year, we hope to have a few new friends from Connecticut attending.

Having this event so late in the year may make it a bit more chilly than normal so to help we will have to have a bigger fire! That's right; the law of Pyrodynamics says that there is a direct relation to the dropping temperature and the size of the fire. :-) If the weather is bad, we will go to plan B.

For any of the out of town guests, please let me know if you are planning on needing a place to crash. For those who plan on arriving Friday night and for those 'townies', Friday night will be the
Pre-Philfest with most likely dinner and the Illini Hockey game followed by billiards and your beverage of choice at one of the local establishments.

Enough talk you say! Detail you want? Here they are.

Saturday, November 6 at 8 p.m. is when the fire will start. Come when you can and stay as long as you want. For those interested in attending, let me know and I will send out more details and information as the event draws nearer.

For anyone who has never attend I suggest you dress warm, bring a crazy creek or camping/folding chair and as always, it is BYOB. Snacks to share are always welcome.

Hope to see you all soon, "

jadeejf

P.S. It's in Urbana, IL and I'd be happy to give you more details if you'd like to e-mail or IM me.
